About GATE

GATE is a national-level engineering entrance test for admission into M.Tech/ Ph.D. programs offered at IITs, NITs, and IISc Bangalore, etc.

The exam is conducted annually by IISc and 7 IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Guwahati, and Roorkee) on a rotational basis.

GATE Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

Here are some things to keep in mind regarding the GATE Exam.

  • GATE Exam is normally conducted on 24 subjects (papers) with 3 sections namely: General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, and the specific subject of the paper.

  • The question paper will comprise of two types: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT)

  • There will be a total of 65 questions adding up to 100 marks in each exam subject. The first 10 questions of each exam, which accumulates a total of 15 marks will be based on General Aptitude (GA).

    Engineering Mathematics is mandatory in the GATE exam with the paper coded as AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF, and XE. This also accumulates 15% of the total marks.

    The rest of the questions based on the specific subject of the exam carries 70% of the total marks.

    Whereas, for papers with the codes AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH, and XL, the General Aptitude section carries 15% of the total marks while the rest of the paper which accumulates 85% of the total marks will be based on the subject of the paper.

  • The GATE Exam usually last an average duration of 2 hours. However, we advise you to plan to finish earlier.

  • The areas of concentration include Algorithms, Data Structure, Computer Organisation, Digital Logic, Computer Networks, Theory of Computation, DataBase, Computer Design, Operating System, and Engineering mathematics.
